UPW used social media to share a video of the squad watching the WPL 2024 first game between the Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, the finalists from the previous season. The Sri Lankan Chamari Athapaththu was heard singing “Jana Gana Mana” before to the game.

Following the withdrawal of English fast bowler Lauren Bell from the WPL 2024, UP Warriorz recruited Chamari Athapaththu as a substitute.

The skipper of Sri Lanka is one of the most experienced players in the game, having participated in over 120 Twenty20 Internationals. He is also one of the most potent hitters. A prominent striker in T20Is, Chamari is the first female Lankan player to make a century in the format.

Athapaththu, one of the most skilled and versatile cricket players in the T20 league, is set to make her WPL debut. She has represented her nation in 122 T20Is, and in 2023, she has been playing well. The aggressive hitter had a stellar strike-rate of 130.91 and ended 2023 with 470 runs. She also set a personal record in Women’s T20Is with her 15 sixes this year.

In response to a question from CricketNext at a private media meeting, the 33-year-old remarked earlier that she prefers to improve her skill set than overanalyzing her limitations.

“I was surprised that I wasn’t selected by one of the WPL teams, not astonished. However, they are beyond of my control. Because these choices are made by other people, such as coaches or team management, I consider what I can influence. These are things I have no control over, but I do have control over how I bat and bowl. All I want to do is do my best. I do my best and accept these choices with a positive attitude, Athapaththu said.

In response to a News18 CricketNext question, UP Warriorz skipper Alyssa Healy acknowledged that it would be a “difficult conversation” to attempt to get Athapaththu in the starting XI.

“We signed a superb player, in my opinion. It goes without saying that having depth in both bat and ball was crucial. And it was a very wonderful addition to the list of names we already had. Fantastic chance for us. Indeed, Healy said, “We’re going to have a really tough talk about who plays in the starting eleven, what opportunities everyone will get, and management as well as myself.”
