Jazim Sharma, an Indian ghazal musician (also known as Jaspreet ‘Jazim’ Sharma), made remarks on the Punjabi music scene and chastised the new-age singers for maintaining their songs centered around themes of kudiyan (ladies), hatyar (weapons), daru (alcohol), and geddi (leisure traveling).

Jazim, who just launched his most recent Shiv bhajan at Shemaroo Bhakti in honor of Mahashivratri, spoke exclusively with DNA India. During the conversation, Jazim expressed his goal of discovering up-and-coming talent and providing them with a stage. He also disclosed his strategy for reintroducing Punjabi soulful music to the general public. Because young people are pursuing the incorrect trends, Jazim said that Punjabi folk music has lost its allure. As a Punjabi, I find it disappointing how Punjab is portrayed in music. Even if we have hit songs on the charts, our representation is still lacking compared to that of badi halki. Punjabi music humara bas balle-balle, shava-shava, ya daru, hatyar, yeh nahi tha. These songs weren’t as popular when they first came out.

Jazim also discussed the artists and songs that influenced Punjabi music, saying, “Jinka gaana poore world ne suna hai, humare yaha Ghulam Ali Khan saab.” Baba Bulle Shah. Sheikh Farid ji and Shah Hussain are examples of Sufi poets.” Jazim also criticized the youthful generation who are considering new-age singers ‘ustaad’. “Kya rich heritage hai humara,” he said. How much does it cost? Young generation hai, woh un logo ko ustaad, legend bol rahe hai, jinhone kuch kiya hi nahi hai. I can’t believe how much this harmonium can do. They have no knowledge of ragas.

Jazim said that he would be actively involved in bringing back Punjabi folk music and that he has purchased a home in Chandigarh. Jazim gave the following justification for the need to restore soulful music to Punjab: “These songs based on hatyar and nashe are fascinating our teenage kids, who will be the future of our country, and this is wrong.” The young Ghazal star concluded by saying, “We shall lose our virsa if this continues. To let people know what authentic Punjabi folk music is, I shall be devoting two to three years to my study and publishing previously unpublished works by our Sufi saints.”
