Oscar candidate “The Holdovers” is charged with copying

Share

The beloved movie “The Holdovers” is shrouded in controversy a few days before the glitter and splendor of the Oscars. The brilliant writer and director of “Luca,” Simon Stephenson, has accused the Oscar-nominated film, which was directed by Alexander Payne and written by David Hemingson, of plagiarizing.

According to Stephenson, the plot of “The Holdovers” is very similar to his own unproduced screenplay, “Frisco.” A sympathetic physician in “Frisco” finds himself unintentionally taking care of a disturbed youngster; this story struck a chord with viewers and industry insiders when it was included on the esteemed 2013 Black List.

In contrast, “The Holdovers” tells the story of a history teacher who, during a tragic Christmas break, befriends a group of aimless teens, a chef, and a bereaved mother. But Stephenson says there’s much more to the two screenplays’ parallels than meets the eye.

With the support of a dossier of papers that allegedly show the striking similarities between “The Holdovers” and Stephenson’s own work, his accusations have taken center stage. He has taken his concerns to the Writers Guild of America in addition to voicing them to the well-known entertainment publication Variety. He bases this on what he thinks is a complete ripoff of “Frisco’s” plot, language, characters, and thematic themes in “The Holdovers.”

Stephenson bemoaned the purported offense in a statement to Variety. He noted that “The Holdovers” canvas seemed to have the soul of “Frisco” plucked and translated in its entirety. He argues that Payne’s picture clearly incorporates a number of unique features from his script, which he painstakingly created over years of creative work.

The usually joyous mood surrounding “The Holdovers” is clouded by accusations of plagiarism, as the industry prepares for Hollywood’s most famous night. The resolution of this disagreement is still up in the air, and with the Oscars quickly approaching, both industry insiders and viewers are left wondering about the bounds of artistic integrity and the complexity of creative inspiration.
